Tiger numbers may drop by 60%

Tiger numbers may drop by 60%

Finally, the Centre comes clean, India has lost just too many tigers so now the prime minister is himself stepping in to launch what many believe is the last battle to save the big cat. However, the numbers of big cats left in the country are simply shocking.

The national tiger census figures are still some months away, but field reports suggest the national count may come down by about 60 per cent.

''The picture outside the tiger reserves and some of the protected areas is not good. We may not have 50 per cent tigers outside the reserves system,'' said Rajesh Gopal, Member-Secretary, National Tiger Conservation Authority.

The four main states of the tiger belt Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh have already recorded a loss of about 750 tigers, that's more than 60 per cent since 2002.

''Because the land use outside, it may not hold viable population of tigers. So may be the trend gets repeated, Gopal added.

On being asked whether tiger numbers are more than 1,400, Gopal replied that we will have to wait for the final outcome.

Gopal sounds cautious, as many states are not ready to acknowledge the crisis. Till now, states conducted their own tiger counts and their ambitious numbers added up to nearly 4,000.

Realistic findings

This time, the Centre is in charge and many states are contesting the more realistic findings. Also, many states are yet to respond to directives issued by the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

''Advisories have gone to the states, some states have responded but we need more responses from several other states. Fortunately, the prime minister himself wanted the real picture,'' Gopal further said.

''We gave a complete picture of the situation the meeting was very useful. We have issued directives for deploying the ex-Army personnel along with the native workforce through central assistance, which we give to states,'' he said.

''Monsoon patrolling is required to be done urgently. We are coming with a better relocation package so that all the 273 villages that are in the core get a fare deal,'' Gopal added.

Other key measures include:

* Central assistance to states for recruiting forest guards.
* Creation of a Park Development Fund.

Two and half years after the Sariska fiasco, the government is finally out of its denial mode.

With tiger numbers down to about one-third of what was being officially claimed till recently, the prime minister's positive intervention is perhaps the last hope for the big cat's future in India. Only if, the states come clean and offer full cooperation.

Tiger Air plans 'fast food' version of travel

Tiger Air plans 'fast food' version of travel
July 25, 2007

The entry of low cost airline Tiger Air to the Australian market will introduce travellers to a 'fast food' version of travel, the chief executive of the Singapore-based carrier said.

Speaking at the Asia Pacific Aviation Summit today, Tony Davis announced Tiger's latest cut-price offering, a $59.95 one-way fare linking Melbourne with the Sunshine Coast.

"Sunshine Coast is Tiger Airways' fourth destination that we have established between Victoria and Queensland," Mr Davis said.

Other destinations to be linked to Tiger's Melbourne base include Perth, Darwin and Launceston.

But the Tiger boss was less forthcoming about his plans for Sydney, refusing to rule the city in or out as a destination.

"I wouldn't rule anything out... we're certainly not going to fall into the trap of other start-ups that have come into Australia," he said.

"They've laid out their business plan for all to see and that gives the competition time and the ability to be selective in how they compete with them."

The Sydney-Melbourne route is widely considered to be the third or fourth busiest in the world, and is serviced by Virgin Blue and Qantas.

Mr Davis also ridiculed a 'double the difference' voucher guarantee offered by Qantas off-shoot Jetstar, arguing that it was too selective.

"Australians have been paying some of the highest fares and that's because of the duopoly," the Tiger chief said.

Tiger's aim was simple - to be the 'RyanAir of Asia' offering cheap no frills airfares to stimulate demand.

"Some of the things we've done with our business, we've learned from fast food," he said.

"These are the industries we take our inspiration from.

"Stack it high, sell it cheap."

Tiger was not tempted to offer long haul services, a central plank of rival Jetstar's strategic expansion.

Instead, Mr Davis said Tiger would continue with a simple one-fare structure and offer ancillary products.

The Tiger chief boasted that Tiger had so far spent less than $50,000 on advertising in Australia.

"We've been in the press every day. For that, we thank our competitors," he said.

Mr Davis confirmed Tiger was still looking for a second and third base in Australia, but declined to nominate locations.

Tiger begin flying in Australia from November.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico , Five Bengal tigers, four of them white males, have debuted at a zoo in western Mexico.

The litter, which was born in April and went on display Wednesday, was the result of a natural breeding program, Guadalajara Zoo director Francisco Rodriguez said.

It was the sixth litter of white tigers born at the zoo, which is known for having produced the cat that attacked Las Vegas entertainer Roy Horn of the Siegfried and Roy act.

The tigers' father, Nino, has sired every litter born at the zoo.
